The award was presented on behalf of President Umarou Sissoco Embaló by the country’s Minister of Defence, Donisio Cabi, during a ceremony at the Kano Government House.

In a statement released on Saturday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the recognition was described as a tribute to Yusuf’s “exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to African solidarity.”

Speaking shortly after receiving the medal during the 33rd Executive Council meeting, Abba Kabir Yusuf said the honour was “deeply humbling” and dedicated it to the people of Kano.

“This recognition is not just for me, but for the people of Kano who continue to demonstrate the true spirit of African brotherhood,” he said.

He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to strengthen educational ties across the continent, stressing that education remained the most powerful bridge between nations. “Our administration will continue to support initiatives that unite Africans and create opportunities for young people,” Yusuf added.

Minister Cabi, who led the Guinea-Bissau delegation, praised the governor’s decision to offer 50 scholarship slots to students from Guinea-Bissau, describing it as “a lifeline and a ray of hope” for many families.

He said the gesture reflected Yusuf’s generosity and vision, which align with the Kwankwasiyya philosophy of empowerment, justice, and shared opportunity.

Cabi also highlighted Kano’s historical role as a centre of learning and commerce in Africa, noting that the scholarship programme would further strengthen relations between the two nations.

He confirmed that the honour was personally approved by President Embaló as a mark of friendship and strategic partnership.

The brief but colourful ceremony was attended by members of the Kano State Executive Council, top officials, and visiting dignitaries, who commended the governor’s efforts to promote regional cooperation through education and youth empowerment.
