Oyebamiji Leads APC Race Amid Shifts in Osun Politics

Munirudeen Oyebamiji edges ahead in Osun APC primary as disqualifications narrow the race; ADC strategy and Adeleke moves keep politics unsettled

Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji is poised to become the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer in Saturday’s Osun State primary following the disqualification of seven aspirants, party sources said in Osogbo on 12 December.

The narrowing of the field leaves only Oyebamiji and Mulikat Abiola Jimoh in contention, while broader political developments continue to shape the 2026 contest.

The APC’s seven-member screening committee, led by Chief Obinna Uzoh, removed prominent figures such as Senator Iyiola Omisore, Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, and Babajide Omoworare due to insufficient backing from financially compliant party members across local government areas.

The move transformed a crowded contest into a streamlined two-person race, a decision seen as an effort to preserve party unity ahead of the elections.

Oyebamiji, from Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area, stands out for his technocratic background, with experience in finance and administration in banking and at the National Inland Waterways Authority.

Over the past year, he has mobilised grassroots support through his AMBO Movement, which coordinates activities across all 332 wards, enhancing his campaign organisation and local reach.

Supporters describe him as a candidate of fiscal discipline and administrative competence.

He has criticised the Adeleke administration for perceived inefficiencies, highlighting revenue growth that has not translated into visible development.

Oyebamiji’s advantage lies in combining organisational strength with a clear policy message, though he must also manage potential backlash from disqualified aspirants and their supporters.

Mulikat Abiola Jimoh, though experienced legislatively, faces challenges in extending her influence statewide.

The narrowed contest increases her visibility, yet her limited network remains a significant hurdle in a primary where local presence often determines success.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is adjusting its strategy under former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who recently became interim national secretary after leaving the APC.

Internal divisions within the party and competition for the 2026 governorship ticket could influence whether the ADC emerges as a formidable force or a marginal player.

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s recent switch from the PDP to the Accord Party adds further complexity.

His statewide networks, incumbency advantages, and resources make him a key factor in shaping the 2026 race.

However, the effectiveness of the Accord Party’s organisational capacity will determine whether his bid can translate into electoral success.

The APC’s streamlined primary, while providing clarity, carries risks. Reconciliation with sidelined factions and a campaign message that resonates broadly are crucial.

The party must also prepare for a potential multi-front contest, with Adeleke and a united ADC challenging its dominance.

Osun’s political landscape remains highly fluid.

The disqualification of aspirants has simplified the APC primary but heightened scrutiny, while shifts within the ADC and Adeleke’s realignment continue to influence strategic calculations.

The 2026 election is expected to be competitive, with coalition-building, messaging, and local trust networks likely to determine the outcome.
