Tinubu Sends New Envoy Nominees to Senate in Swift Diplomatic Move

Tinubu envoy nominees sent to Senate as President seeks swift screening of new non-career ambassadors

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday forwarded a fresh list of non-career ambassadorial nominees to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling on the upper chamber to expedite their confirmation to ensure key diplomatic posts are promptly filled.

The new list included former Sole Administrator of Rivers State and one-time Chief of Naval Staff Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, former presidential aide Ita Enang, former Imo State First Lady Chioma Ohakim and former Minister of Interior and ex-Chief of Army Staff Abdulrahman Dambazau.

Their nominations formed part of a broader effort by the administration to reinforce Nigeria’s diplomatic presence at a time of evolving international dynamics.

The President’s letter, read during plenary by Senator Akpabio, urged lawmakers to give swift consideration to the nominees to strengthen the country’s outreach and representation abroad.

The Senate President immediately referred the list to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, directing it to conduct screenings and return with its report within one week.

The development followed an earlier transmission of ambassadorial names in recent days, marking a continued, vigorous push by the administration to close longstanding gaps in Nigeria’s diplomatic postings.

The fresh nominations are expected to inject experienced leadership into the foreign service, with several nominees having held high-ranking military or governmental roles.
