PDP Faction Inaugurates Caretaker Committee in Enugu

PDP inaugurates a caretaker committee in Enugu, aiming to restore unity and rebuild party dominance ahead of the 2027 elections

Enugu, Nigeria – The factional National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, inaugurated a new caretaker committee for Enugu State on Sunday, November 30, 2025.

The ceremony, held in Enugu, was led by the factional acting PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulraham Mohameed, and National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, with a large turnout of party members from all 17 local government areas.

The move comes in the wake of Governor Peter Mbah’s defection to the All Progressives Congress on October 24, 2025, alongside his executive council and state PDP leadership, ending the party’s dominance in Enugu for the first time since 1999.

Former Chairman of Igboeze South Local Government Area, Vitus Okechi, was inaugurated as chairman of the caretaker committee, while Chukwunonye Okereke assumed the role of secretary.

Okechi stressed the need for unity and loyalty, vowing to restore the PDP’s influence in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Enugu State is PDP, and PDP is Enugu State. We appreciate those who refused to defect despite challenges. Your loyalty will be rewarded. Returning to the Lion Building in 2027 is fait accompli,” Okechi said.

Okereke highlighted integrity and inclusive leadership as central to the party’s revitalisation efforts. “We are committed to a recalibrated PDP driven by honesty, appreciation of members, and proper administrative competence,” he added.

Immediate past vice chairman Dr Okey Ozoani commended the NWC for entrusting the new team, describing the transition as an opportunity to correct past missteps.

“The current political situation arose from an alien leadership disconnected from the PDP family. 2027 offers us an opportunity to restore our legacy,” he said.

Other dignitaries, including Prof (Mrs) Iloh, Celine Ugwu, Chizoba Ezeagor, Chief Ken Obiora, Chief Chukwujekwu Nebo, and Chief Obiora Ugwu, expressed confidence in the committee and called for a focused effort to reactivate structures across all 260 wards.

Dr Nnamdi Onyia urged members to remain steadfast, noting that loyalty and consistency are essential for political reward.
