Lagos APC Backs South West Governors on State Police

Lagos APC endorses South West governors’ call for state police, urging President Tinubu to act to strengthen security and protect lives

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared its support for the renewed call by South West governors for the creation of state police, urging President Bola Tinubu to use his office to hasten its establishment.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in Lagos by the party’s spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo.

Oladejo said the governors’ proposal reflected a deep understanding of evolving security challenges confronting communities in the South West and across Nigeria.

He described the introduction of state police as “not just ripe, it is overdue,” stressing that a multi-layered policing system is now necessary given the growing sophistication of criminal activity.

The spokesman highlighted regional initiatives such as the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, as evidence of the benefits of localised responses to crime and emerging threats.

According to Oladejo, a state police force would enhance intelligence gathering, improve coordination between security agencies, and strengthen response capabilities.

“The security challenges facing the country require multi-layered policing solutions. State police, if professionally regulated and federally coordinated, would complement ongoing national security efforts,” Oladejo said.

He called on Nigerians to engage constructively on how such a policing structure could function effectively within the federal system, cautioning against fear-driven and politicised narratives.

Oladejo also reiterated Lagos APC’s confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to deliver far-reaching security reforms and expressed solidarity with the South West governors for their commitment to protecting residents.
