Speaking as the special guest of honour at the 39th Stop TB Partnership Board Meeting in Manila, Philippines, Mrs Tinubu said Nigeria was working to reduce reliance on donor funding while building resilient systems capable of sustaining the fight against tuberculosis.

In a statement issued by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, on Wednesday, the First Lady, who also serves as the Global and National Stop TB Champion, described tuberculosis as “the world’s biggest infectious killer disease,” stressing that its airborne nature makes it a shared threat.

She said the sustainability of Nigeria’s TB response must come from within, through leadership, community engagement, and strategic coordination rather than dependence on external assistance.

“Despite temporary shifts in support from some partners, Nigeria’s efforts have remained strong,” Mrs Tinubu noted.

“Through steadfast leadership and community action, we ensured that TB cases in 2025 did not increase. This shows the power of country ownership and the commitment of Nigerians driving the response forward.”

Highlighting the human cost of the disease, she said: “TB claims about 1.3 million lives globally each year. In Nigeria alone, around 479,000 people developed TB in 2023, with over 150,000 deaths recorded.

These are not statistics — they are fathers, mothers, sons and daughters who compel us to act with compassion.”

Mrs Tinubu praised the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Stop TB Partnership, and affiliated agencies for their transparency and commitment to expanding access to testing, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as integrating TB services into primary healthcare.

The Stop TB Partnership Board Chair and Philippine Health Secretary, Teodoro Herbosa, emphasised that TB remains both a health and development challenge for many nations, urging member countries to sustain momentum despite existing progress.

Executive Director of the Stop TB Partnership, Dr Lucica Ditiu, in her report, noted that data integration between governments and the partnership was vital to achieving the 2030 target.

“In the last two months, five countries deployed new grant facilities, screening 8,000 people and placing 3,000 on preventive treatment,” she said.

Also present at the meeting was Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate. The 38th edition of the Stop TB Partnership Board Meeting was held in Abuja in 2024.
