ICC Insists Muslims Should Produce Oyo Governor in 2027

Oyo State governorship 2027 religious balance debate as ICC insists Muslims should produce the next governor, citing power-sharing concerns

The Islamic Coordination Council (ICC) has declared that Muslims should produce the next governor of Oyo State in the 2027 governorship election, setting up a fresh political debate over power rotation and religious representation in the state.

Religious Balance in Oyo Governorship Race 2027 position was contained in a statement jointly signed by the council’s chairman, Sulaiman Abanise, and secretary, Mas’ud Akintola, where the group disagreed with recent comments attributed to Governor Seyi Makinde.

ICC said its demand is anchored on what it described as an informal tradition of religious balancing in Oyo State’s political leadership structure.

According to the group, this pattern became more visible during the 2019 transition period, when a former chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the state reportedly stated that it was the turn of Christians to govern after the administration of former Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The council was responding to remarks allegedly made by Governor Makinde during a farewell event for 2026 Hajj pilgrims, which it described as a comparison between executive and legislative representation in the state.

The ICC argued that such comparisons fail to reflect the weight and responsibilities of the office of governor.

“We are aware that the governor is sufficiently educated to understand the difference between executive and legislative roles,” the statement said.

It further described the governor’s remarks as misleading and disrespectful to the intelligence of residents.

The council noted that only six of the 18 individuals who have governed Oyo State since 1976 were Muslims, insisting that this statistic supports its call for a Muslim governor in 2027.

It also referenced the appointment of a Muslim deputy governor in 2021 following the impeachment of the then deputy, suggesting that religious considerations have previously influenced political decisions in the state.

ICC further alleged that Christian leaders were involved in consultations with Muslim stakeholders during Governor Makinde’s re-election campaign.

Warning against what it termed imbalance, the council said ignoring religious considerations in the 2027 succession process could have political consequences, including shifts in voter alignment.
