PDP Chieftain, Showunmi Says Sanwo-Olu Must Fix Lagos Before Legacy is Sealed

Sanwo-Olu must fix Lagos, says PDP’s Segun Showunmi, warning that environmental decay could stain his legacy if urgent actions are not taken

Sanwo-Olu must fix Lagos, a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain in Ogun State, Otunba Segun Showunmi, said on Wednesday as he urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to tackle Lagos’s growing environmental crisis before his second term ends.

While commending the governor’s six-year track record of development, Showunmi warned that without urgent intervention, Lagos risks descending into a “mega slum.”

Showunmi, the convener of The Alternatives Movement, issued the statement in celebration of Sanwo-Olu’s 60th birthday.

He acknowledged the progress made in infrastructure and governance under Sanwo-Olu but insisted the final two years of his tenure must focus squarely on enforcing the state’s master plan and addressing unregulated developments across Lagos.

“You have undeniably pitched your tent with good governance,” Showunmi said.

But the state’s environmental decay needs urgent, firm intervention. Lagos must not be allowed to become a mega slum under your watch.

The PDP stalwart stressed that successive governors had laid a foundation that must not be squandered.

He specifically mentioned President Bola Tinubu, former governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode as leaders who each made efforts to modernise Lagos.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu started the vision, Fashola deepened the framework, and Ambode extended it into underserved areas. It is now on you to sanitise the built-up areas and uphold that vision,” Showunmi said.

He urged Sanwo-Olu to prioritise the work of Environment and Water Resources Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, calling for tough measures where necessary.

“What must be pulled down should be pulled down. What must be provided for the greater good must be done,” he insisted.

In a call to preserve the state’s stature as Africa’s largest commercial city, Showunmi added: “Lagos is not a no man’s land. It is a land for all who wish to live and thrive here. You must sparkle like a diamond. Many happy returns.”
