NDC Defends Anti-Defection Policy as Constitutional

The Nigerian Democratic Congress has strongly defended its anti-defection policy, stating that Article 16 of its constitution requires candidates to sign affidavits committing to remain in the party after winning elections

In Abuja on 19 June 2026, the Nigerian Democratic Congress robustly defended its controversial anti-defection policy, insisting that the requirement for all candidates to sign legal documents committing to vacate office if they leave the party after winning elections is firmly rooted in the party’s constitution.

Osa Director, National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, made the clarification during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time.

He explained that the policy applies to candidates contesting for governorship, National Assembly, and other elective positions on the party’s platform.

“Article 16 of NDC’s constitution clearly states the anti-defection policy,” Director said. “Any member of our party should have read through our constitution which clearly states in Article 16, that they must give an affidavit to remain in the party once elected.”

The NDC introduced the policy recently through a Memorandum of Understanding that all public office-seeking members are required to sign.

The move is designed to curb the frequent defections that have plagued Nigerian politics, where many elected officials abandon the parties that sponsored them shortly after winning.

Director drew a clear distinction between ordinary politicians and statesmen. “Politicians are interested in elections, while statesmen are interested in nation building,” he said.

“NDC is a party interested in holistic growth and development of Nigeria. To that extent, we will encourage other parties to adopt this policy, to deepen the tentacles of democracy and the rule of law.”

The party views the anti-defection measure as a necessary tool to build internal discipline and ensure long-term commitment to its ideals.

It comes amid growing efforts by the relatively new NDC to position itself as a credible alternative capable of challenging the established All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political analysts note that while similar ideas have been attempted in the past, enforcing such clauses has often proven difficult once candidates assume office.

However, the NDC believes its constitutional backing and signed affidavits will give the policy stronger legal teeth.

The defence of the policy reflects the party’s determination to differentiate itself through stronger internal governance and a focus on ideological consistency rather than mere electoral victory.
