EFCC reportedly freezes Osun government account ahead of the August 15 governorship election as the state questions the legality of the move
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly placed a Post No Debit restriction on an Osun State Government account domiciled with First Bank, just 10 days before the state’s governorship election.

According to documents cited by Vanguard, the affected account is reportedly used for the payment of workers’ salaries.
The reported restriction comes ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election in Osun State.
The development follows allegations by Governor Ademola Adeleke that the EFCC was planning to freeze state government accounts and those belonging to senior government officials in the build-up to the election.
Reacting to the reported action, the Osun State Government, through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, described the move as an attempt to disrupt government activities ahead of the poll.
Governor Adeleke also questioned the legality of the reported restriction, maintaining that the anti-graft agency does not have the statutory authority to freeze a state government’s account.
A source within the state administration, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly, claimed the restriction had already taken effect.
“I can confirm that the state government account has been frozen by the EFCC. It is no longer an allegation. The governor will address the press shortly to update the public on the situation,” the source said.
The reported account restriction has heightened political tensions in Osun, where parties are intensifying campaigns ahead of the governorship election.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement confirming or denying the reported action, and the reason for the alleged account restriction remained unclear.

The latest development comes amid an increasingly charged political atmosphere in Osun, with the ruling administration and opposition parties trading accusations over security, governance and the conduct of the forthcoming election.
