The Borno APC governorship consensus decision was reached during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, bringing together top party figures and political leaders from the state.
According to a statement issued by the senator’s legislative aide, Usman Alkali, the meeting resolved that Lawan should step down from the race in the interest of party unity and cohesion ahead of the upcoming elections.
The gathering was chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima and attended by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, APC stakeholders, National Assembly members, and representatives of the Borno Elders Forum.
The agreement reportedly positioned Mustapha Gubio as the party’s preferred governorship candidate, with Lawan expected to retain his seat in the Senate following his withdrawal from the contest.
The development was described as a strategic move aimed at strengthening internal unity within the APC and consolidating its political structure in Borno State ahead of the elections.
In a separate confirmation, the Borno State Government stated that Governor Zulum formally presented Gubio to Vice President Shettima as the consensus choice of the party.
Governor Zulum commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and praised the Vice President’s role in fostering unity among party stakeholders in the state.
