Senator Godswill Akpabio announced the decision following the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who previously represented the district, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The Senate President stated that the development necessitated the formal declaration of a vacancy in line with constitutional provisions guiding legislative representation.

He directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat, describing the timeline as consistent with existing electoral laws.

In a firm directive aimed at ensuring compliance, Senator Godswill Akpabio also instructed the Clerk to the National Assembly to formally transmit the Senate’s resolution to INEC for immediate action.
