APC Sweeps All 18 Chairmanship Seats in Edo LG Poll

APC Sweeps Edo LG Poll, winning all 18 chairmanship and 192 councillorship seats, according to EDSIEC

The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of all 18 local government chairmanship seats and the 192 ward councillorship seats contested in the Edo State local government election held on Saturday, 11 July 2026.

EDSIEC Chairman Jonathan Aifuobhokhan announced the results in Benin City on Sunday, 12 July 2026, describing the exercise as largely peaceful despite isolated operational challenges.

The declaration gives the APC a clean sweep of every elective position contested in the state’s 18 local government areas, extending the party’s control at the grassroots level following recent political gains in Edo.

Announcing the outcome, Aifuobhokhan said accreditation, voting, sorting, counting, collation and the declaration of results were conducted in line with the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law 2022, as amended in 2026, and other relevant electoral regulations.

“Based on the official results declared by the returning officers, the commission hereby declares that the All Progressives Congress won the 18 local government chairmanship positions and all the 192 councillorship seats contested in the election,” Aifuobhokhan said.

The EDSIEC chairman commended returning officers for carrying out their statutory responsibilities professionally and in accordance with the law.

Jonathan Aifuobhokhan also praised political parties, candidates, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, community leaders and voters for maintaining peace throughout the exercise.

Although the commission acknowledged minor logistical issues in a few locations, Jonathan Aifuobhokhan said the challenges did not materially affect either the conduct or the outcome of the election.

The electoral body also pledged to strengthen future elections through regular reviews and broader stakeholder engagement.

Certificates of return are scheduled to be presented to the newly elected chairmen and councillors on Monday, 13 July 2026, formally completing the electoral process.

The election comes months after the APC consolidated its position in Edo following the 2024 governorship election, strengthening the party’s influence across the state’s political landscape.

However, local government elections in Nigeria have frequently attracted scrutiny from opposition parties and election observers, who often raise concerns over competitiveness, voter participation and the independence of state electoral commissions.
