Delta APC Ward Congresses Spark Controversy Among Party Leaders

Delta APC ward congress controversy emerges as party coalition alleges marginalisation despite official claims of peaceful, transparent exercise

Controversy has erupted over the ward and local government congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held on Wednesday across Delta State, dividing party leaders over the conduct and inclusiveness of the exercise.

Hon. Simon Chukwuemeka Atigwe, Secretary of the committee overseeing the congresses, described the process at Ward 10 in Oshimili South Local Government Area as smooth, calm, and well-coordinated.

He said party members across Delta South, Delta Central, and Delta North senatorial districts conducted themselves peacefully, with no disputes requiring intervention.

“As part of our assignment, we have been moving round the state to assess the situation on ground. From Delta South to Delta Central, and now here in Delta North at Ward 10, Oshimili South, what we have seen has been commendable,” Atigwe stated, commending members for their discipline and impressive turnout.

However, the Delta North APC Coalition for Equity raised concerns over alleged marginalisation of long-standing party members following the defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the growing influence of his political structure within the party.

Chief Alex Ikpeazu, chairman of the coalition, and Acting Secretary-General Ken-Chad Rafua, claimed foundational members were excluded from meetings where consensus ward and local government executive lists were drafted.

They alleged that forms purchased by party members were completed privately for loyalists, undermining fairness and transparency.

Responding, Valentine Onojeghuo, State Publicity Secretary of the APC, dismissed the allegations, saying the process adhered strictly to the party constitution and guidelines.

“These claims are entirely false, misleading, and appear calculated to create unnecessary discord within the ranks of our party,” Onojeghuo said.

He added that the consensus arrangements were designed to harmonise the interests of both long-standing members and new entrants, ensuring inclusiveness and stability across the wards and senatorial districts.

The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between established party members and newer blocs, even as the APC maintains that the congresses reflect a balanced and transparent internal process.
