Agbu Kefas APC Defection: Taraba governor denies taking bribe, says switch to APC driven by state interest and plans for 2027 elections
Agbu Kefas has dismissed claims that he received a bribe influencing his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to State House correspondents on Wednesday following his first meeting with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, Kefas said the move was motivated by personal conviction and the broader interest of Taraba State rather than financial gain.
“My decision was based on what is best for Taraba State and its future. Nobody gave me money to defect to the APC,” he stated, describing the switch as “a carefully considered step to improve cooperation and development outcomes.”
The governor expressed confidence in delivering Taraba State to President Tinubu in the 2027 elections, citing strong grassroots support and ongoing developmental projects as the basis for public trust.
“We have done all our mapping, our planning, and I’m on the ground, and I have the people. The people have me, and I’ve always told them I have no business being in government than for them… Taraba is for him, and he’s going to get nothing less than 100 per cent,” Kefas said.
He added that his meeting with President Tinubu focused on security, agriculture, and social welfare, describing the discussion as productive and key to enhancing collaboration between Taraba State and the federal government.
Kefas also called on residents to foster peace and unity, noting the overlap of the Christian Lenten season and the Muslim Ramadan period as an opportunity for collective prayers and renewed commitment to national development.

Agbu Kefas, elected under the PDP in 2023, had initially planned to defect to the APC on 19 November 2025 but formally switched allegiance on 31 January 2026.
