Oyo 2027 Governorship: PDP and APC Gird for Tough Contest

The 2027 Oyo State governorship election is shaping up as a competitive contest, with PDP and APC aspirants positioning for party nominations and strategic alliances

The political landscape in Oyo State is heating up as aspirants from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepare to secure their parties’ nominations ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Analysts predict a highly competitive contest, with multiple factors likely to influence the outcome.

PDP: A Robust Field of Contenders

Within the PDP, Governor Seyi Makinde’s endorsement is pivotal. Key aspirants include Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly Adebo Ogundoyin, agribusiness advocate Adebo Akande, businessman Adegboyega Adegoke, human rights lawyer Niyi Aborisade, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, lawyer and financial expert Beulah Adeoye, diplomat Taofeek Arapaja, and entrepreneur-politician Femi Babalola.

Ogundoyin, the youngest State Assembly Speaker and current Speaker of the Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly of Nigeria, stands out for his youth, loyalty, and leadership credentials.

Akande has been instrumental in transforming Oyo’s agricultural sector, while other aspirants bring diverse experience in governance, law, philanthropy, and diplomacy.

APC: Notable Contenders

The APC also features a formidable lineup. Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Senator Teslim Folarin, House of Representatives member Remi Oseni, National Revenue Service Executive Chairman Zacheaus Adedeji, former Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan, cardiovascular surgeon-politician Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, education entrepreneur Saheed Oladele, and political figure Akeem Agbaje have all declared intentions to contest.

Each APC aspirant brings a unique blend of governance, legislative, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and political experience, ensuring a competitive primary within the party.

Factors Shaping the 2027 Election

Zoning: Oyo State’s five political zones Ibadan, Oke-Ogun, Ogbomoso, Oyo, and Ibarapa play a critical role.

The Ibadan Zone, with roughly 45 percent of the state’s voters, is particularly influential. Calls for power rotation, especially from less represented zones, may shape aspirants’ strategies.

Religion: Religious affiliation remains a consideration, with rotational principles historically alternating leadership between Christians and Muslims.

Governor Makinde, a Christian, must balance these dynamics to maintain party cohesion.

Internal Party Dynamics: PDP’s endorsement process and APC’s ability to present a united front will heavily influence each party’s chances.

Makinde’s recent by-election victory in Ibadan North Federal Constituency appears to have strengthened his influence within the PDP, potentially shaping the selection of the party’s governorship candidate.

A Unique Contest

The 2027 election is notable as Oyo governors have historically struggled to hand over power to successors within their parties.

Makinde’s decision to groom a successor within the PDP opens the field widely, allowing multiple aspirants to emerge.
