The race for the APC ticket is crowded with experienced political figures, including Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Valentine Asuen, Lucky Imasuen, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, and Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama. Aspirants from opposition parties have not yet declared interest.
Political observers note that Senator Imasuen’s bid could prove challenging.
He initially won the seat in 2023 under the Labour Party, riding the wave of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign, before defecting to the APC, where he has since become a rallying figure.
Imasuen previously served as a Senior Legislative Aide to Senator Urhoghide from 2015 to 2023.
Supporters argue that Imasuen remains the best candidate for Edo South, highlighting his empowerment of over 10,000 women, youths, and artisans, and noting that his two years in the Senate have given him legislative experience.
An APC chieftain cautioned voters against nepotism and cronyism, urging support for candidates with proven character and capacity to serve the people effectively.
Pastor Ize-Iyamu, a seasoned player in Edo politics with two failed governorship bids in 2016 and 2020, is widely seen as Imasuen’s greatest threat.
He reportedly enjoys the backing of Governor Monday Okpebholo and has a well-established political structure.
Valentine Asuen, former APC State Youth Leader and 2023 Edo South candidate, also maintains political support, including from former Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa.
Senator Matthew Urhoghide and Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama are also positioning for the ticket, leveraging alliances within the APC and former PDP networks.
Lucky Imasuen, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, has also joined the contest.
