FG denies existence of ADP4VIP task force, calling viral claims of targeting opposition politicians fabricated and misleading
The Federal Government on Tuesday categorically refuted claims of a covert multi-agency operation designed to unlawfully arrest, detain, or prosecute opposition politicians, describing a circulating document on the matter as “fabricated” and part of deliberate disinformation.

The disputed document, shared widely on social media, alleged a special task force codenamed “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons), involving agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and purportedly coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser. It claimed the task force targeted opposition figures, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, denied the existence of such a programme.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria categorically states that it harbours no plans to unlawfully arrest, detain, or prosecute opposition figures,” the statement read.
The government stressed that the document’s claims of a coordinated effort by the EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) were false.
It added that the administration remains focused on “implementing measurable economic reforms, defeating insecurity, expanding trade opportunities, and restoring investor confidence.”
The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democratic principles and due process, citing Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to free association and assembly. It also cautioned against the spread of disinformation, warning that such tactics could intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The attempt by some opposition elements to frame lawful accountability as political targeting is a dangerous red herring,” the statement noted, urging Nigerians to reject “the politics of distortion and division” and remain vigilant.
