Gbenga Hashim urges PDP NEC members to rise above factions and resolve the party’s leadership crisis through political solutions
Former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has called on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to rise above factional interests and resolve the ongoing leadership crisis politically.

Hashim made the appeal during a meeting with PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Tanimu Turaki (SAN), in Abuja.
Hashim, who was among the conveners of the PDP in 1998 and the party’s first elected deputy national publicity secretary, said the crisis could be resolved within a week if the leadership prioritises political solutions over legal battles.
“There are more than enough legitimate members of the National Executive Committee to convene a meeting and resolve this crisis within one week,” he said, citing Sections 3(1) and 3(4) of the PDP Constitution, which empower two-thirds of NEC members to act.
He emphasised that the majority of NEC members were elected before the disputed Ibadan convention and retain unquestionable legitimacy.
Hashim warned that continued internal paralysis could weaken the PDP’s role as a credible opposition party and threaten Nigeria’s democratic balance.
“NEC members must rise above factional interests and stand for posterity, for the party, and for the nation,” he said.
In response, National Chairman Turaki thanked Hashim for his visit and commitment to party unity, affirming that the leadership remains open to reconciliation efforts, provided they uphold the party’s stability and continued existence.

The meeting at Turaki’s Asokoro residence in Abuja was also attended by the Deputy National Chairman and the National Youth Leader.
