Lagos State directs gated streets to open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the festive season to ease traffic and improve road access
The Lagos State Government has ordered communities operating gated streets to open their gates daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. during the festive season to ease traffic congestion across the state.

The directive, issued by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, also calls on owners of gates and other structures erected on public roads without prior approval from the Ministry of Transportation to remove them within seven days.
“The Lagos State Government has directed communities operating gated streets to ensure that such gates are opened daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. during the festive period to ease traffic flow across the State,” the statement read.
The Ministry of Transportation highlighted that the directive aligns with the THEMES+ Agenda of the current administration, which prioritises traffic fluidity, safety, and the enhancement of ease of doing business in Lagos State.
While acknowledging the security benefits of gated streets, the ministry emphasised the importance of keeping roads accessible, particularly alternative routes currently experiencing heavy traffic due to increased travel, commerce, tourism, and entertainment activities during the festive period.
Enforcement measures will be implemented to guarantee unrestricted access in and out of gated streets, with the aim of preventing congestion and safeguarding lives and property.

This measure mirrors a similar directive issued in December 2024, signalling an annual strategy to manage Yuletide traffic challenges and improve the festive experience for residents and visitors.
