APC Chieftain Warns Against Dropping VP Shettima

APC chieftain Abayomi Mumuni warns replacing VP Shettima on religious grounds could hurt 2027 chances

Abayomi Mumuni, a senior chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has cautioned against any attempt to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima on religious grounds ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Mumuni made the remarks on Wednesday in response to controversy over the omission of Vice President Shettima’s photograph from a banner at the North-East Zonal Public Hearing on the proposed amendment of the APC constitution.

The APC leader argued that the northern region currently lacks a Christian candidate with sufficient political influence and grassroots support to match Shettima’s nationwide appeal.

He warned that sidelining the Vice President could seriously undermine the party’s chances of retaining power.

“Any miscalculation in this regard could jeopardise the winning ticket for the current administration,” Mumuni said, describing suggestions to replace Shettima with a Christian candidate as strategically unsound.

Speculation has grown in political circles about the possibility of dropping Vice President Shettima from the APC’s 2027 presidential ticket.

However, Mumuni emphasised that such a move could backfire, noting the importance of Shettima’s contribution to the party’s electoral strength.

Political analysts say Mumuni’s warning underscores the delicate balance of religious and regional considerations in Nigerian politics, especially in the lead-up to a critical election year.
