Umo Eno’s Defection: Political Risk for Economic Advancement

Political risk drives economic advancement as Governor Umo Eno joins APC to realise Ibom Deep Seaport and reshape Akwa Ibom’s economic future

As Governor Umo Eno, PhD, officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on June 21, 2025, he proclaimed that it was a risky move, but he was confident that the risk he had taken would bring economic advancement to Akwa Ibom State.

He told the gathering that his progressive state movement is predicated on the enlightened state interest ,that joining the APC will help actualise the infrastructure drive in Akwa Ibom State, including the Deep Sea Port project that has been lingering for as long as thirty years

Many people who are unfamiliar with the political landscape of Akwa Ibom State may wonder about the specific risks associated with this decision. Nevertheless, these risks are both clear and substantial.

Akwa Ibom State was characterized by a robust and well-established structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This structure has been meticulously organized over the past 28 years, spanning from the grassroots level -units and wards,to local government areas, federal constituencies, and senatorial districts.

Many residents of Akwa Ibom are mourning the PDP, akin to grieving for a beloved family member.

Despite the party’s struggles at the national level, it remains strong and resilient at the state level.

This context explains why the Governor emphasized in his initial declaration that he is approaching this transition not from a position of weakness, but from a position of strength.

His goal is to join the Akwa Ibom State APC to rebuild the party and promote reconciliation while also working to reshape the fractured political landscape.

This fragile structure makes winning elections a daunting challenge, leading many to question why the Governor would take such a risky decision that could jeopardize his chances for a second term.

However, if the Ibom Deep Seaport, which the President has promised to the state, comes to fruition, the risk may be justified.

Despite their sorrow and dissatisfaction, the people of Akwa Ibom have rallied behind the Governor in large numbers, driven by their affection for him and his remarkable performance in office, which has been both impressive and noteworthy.

Although political risk can present difficulties, it is often an essential factor for high-stakes leaders aiming for economic advancement and growth in their sectors.

This assertion underscores the reality that while political risk may present formidable challenges, it remains a critical consideration for leaders who aspire to drive economic growth and enhance the welfare of their constituents.

In his address, Vice President Senator Shettima, acting on behalf of President Ahmed Tinubu, assured the Givernor and the people of Akwa Ibom that their political sacrifices would not be in vain.

“I am telling you this, Your Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, because I want you and your co-travellers to know that Mr. President is a bridge-builder, an inveterate democrat, and so, your decision to come home to the APC is one that you will never regret.

He emphasized that the administration is committed to realizing the Ibom Deep Seaport project, which promises to catalyze a multitude of transformative initiatives for the state.

In a gesture of appreciation, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, expressed his gratitude to the governor for the initiative, while simultaneously assuring the citizens of the state that the federal government would fulfill the requests pertaining to the Deep Sea Port Project and other related matters.

Upon its completion, the Ibom Deep Seaport is poised to revolutionize the economic fabric of Akwa Ibom, a state traditionally characterized as a civil service economy.

This strategic development is set to transition the state towards a robust, private sector-driven economy.

This is a risk worth taking, because the Ibom Deep Seaport will transform Akwa Ibom’s economy.

The anticipated impact of the Ibom Deep Seaport is profound; it is projected to eradicate unemployment within the state by generating over two hundred thousand direct jobs, alongside an estimated three hundred thousand indirect jobs.

Such an influx of employment opportunities represents a monumental leap forward for the economic vitality of Akwa Ibom.

Governor Umo Eno exemplifies a visionary approach to governance, prioritizing the economic future of the state over his comfort in political aspirations for a second term.

He has willingly exchanged personal tranquility for the promise of a transformative economic legacy that will alter the trajectory of his constituents’ lives.

This commitment illustrates a governance model that is fundamentally people-centric, one that prioritizes the welfare of the populace over self-serving administrative practices.

It represents a paradigm shift towards a governance ethos that seeks to uplift and empower the masses, thereby fostering a sustainable and inclusive economic environment.

Governor Umo Eno’s decision to transition the entire structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to facilitate the development of the Ibom Deep Sea Port represents a significant political risk.

However, this move is strategically aligned with the goal of advancing the state’s economic prospects.

The importance of this decision cannot be overstated. By aligning with the APC, Governor Eno is positioning himself and the state to leverage the political and economic advantages that come with being part of the ruling party at the national level.

The Ibom Deep Sea Port is a critical infrastructure project that has the potential to transform the economic landscape of the State , attracting investment, creating jobs, and enhancing trade opportunities.

This bold political maneuver demonstrates a commitment to prioritizing the long-term economic growth of the state over short-term political affiliations.

It underscores the necessity of making difficult choices in governance, especially when such choices can lead to substantial benefits for the populace.

The successful realization of the Ibom Deep Sea Port could serve as a catalyst for broader economic development, making the state a key player in national , Africa, and international trade.

Lastly , while the political risk involved in this transition is considerable, it is a calculated step towards achieving significant economic advancement for the state.
