Top South-South Politician: James Onanefe Ibori

James Onanefe Ibori is a prominent Nigerian politician who served as the Governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007.

An ethnic Urhobo, he was a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a national force in Nigerian politics, particularly within the Niger Delta region.

During his two terms as governor, he was credited with significant strides in infrastructure development, education, and healthcare within Delta State. He also played a vital role in advocating for resource control for oil-producing states.

However, Ibori’s political career was significantly impacted by corruption charges.

In 2012, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison by a UK court for fraud and money laundering. He was released in December 2016 after serving part of his sentence and was deported to Nigeria, where he continues to retain considerable political influence, particularly in Delta State.

His return to Nigeria saw him re-engage in political activities, and he remains a key behind-the-scenes player and a respected elder statesman to many in the region.
