Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, often affectionately known as “Mama Bakassi,” is a distinguished Nigerian politician, social activist, and businesswoman.
Born on February 19, 1946, in Cross River State, Ita-Giwa’s diverse career began in nursing and pharmaceuticals before her passionate advocacy for the marginalized, especially the people of Bakassi, propelled her into politics.
She served as the NRC chairman for Delta State and was elected to the federal House of Representatives (1992-1993).
Her commitment to the Bakassi people, particularly during their displacement, earned her widespread admiration and her enduring nickname.
She further served as a Senator representing Cross River South constituency from 1999 to 2003, where she championed issues concerning the Niger Delta, women, and the environment.
Post-Senate, she became President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters.
Ita-Giwa is recognized for her resilience, her unwavering voice for the vulnerable, and her continuous efforts in humanitarian causes, including combating human trafficking.
