President Bola Tinubu directs political appointees seeking 2027 elective offices to resign by March 31, ensuring compliance with electoral laws
President Bola Tinubu has ordered all political appointees in his government intending to contest the 2027 general elections to resign by March 31, 2026, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, disclosed on Wednesday.

The directive, communicated via a circular issued by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries.
“All affected officials must submit their resignation letters through the office of the SGF on or before the stipulated deadline,” the circular stated, adding that the measure is intended to ensure compliance with electoral laws, promote transparency, and guarantee a level playing field for all aspirants.
The directive applies to ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior and junior special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies.

Officials who fail to comply may be deemed ineligible to participate in party primaries, highlighting the administration’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.
