The President offered heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kogi State following the fatal incident on the River Niger.
The accident, which occurred on Tuesday in the Ibaji Local Government Area, involved a boat carrying traders heading to the Ilushi Market in Edo State.
Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed that the death toll had risen to 26.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow, emphasising that the victims were engaged in a legitimate pursuit of livelihood.
“The President expresses profound sorrow at the unfortunate incident, describing it as shocking and unfortunate, especially as the victims were embarking on their legitimate quest to make a decent living,” the statement read.
Tinubu extended appreciation to first responders at the scene and urged all levels of government and emergency agencies to continue supporting survivors and affected families.
He also made a stern appeal to water transport operators, stressing the need to prioritise passenger safety over profit.
“Operators of water transportation must prioritise safety over financial considerations in their daily business,” Onanuga quoted him as saying.
The President concluded by praying for the repose of the departed souls and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the region, with many communities mourning their lost loved ones and calling for better regulation of inland waterway transport.
