Sule Lamido Declares Bid for PDP National Chairman

Sule Lamido declares bid for PDP National Chairman, pledging to rebuild the party and strengthen its unity ahead of the 2027 general election

Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Lamido made the announcement on Monday through a post on his verified Facebook page, confirming that he would visit the PDP’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, in Abuja to purchase his nomination form.

“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of National Chairman,” Lamido wrote.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of democracy and to rebuilding the PDP into a strong and credible opposition. “My commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable,” he added.

The PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is preparing to elect a new national chairman at its forthcoming elective convention. The leadership contest has already exposed divisions within the party, particularly among northern stakeholders.

Lamido’s entry into the race comes despite earlier moves by some northern PDP leaders to endorse former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as a consensus candidate for the chairmanship.

However, factions loyal to Lamido and another senior party figure, Nyesom Wike, have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, arguing that the process lacked transparency and adequate consultation.

During its 102nd National Executive Committee meeting in August, the PDP zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South while reserving the national chairmanship slot for the North. Northern leaders later micro-zoned the position to the North-West, Lamido’s political base.

The party’s National Convention Organising Committee, chaired by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, announced that the screening of aspirants for national offices will take place on Tuesday, October 28. The screening panel will be led by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a respected legal luminary and former Ondo State governorship candidate.

Lamido’s declaration sets the stage for what could become a defining contest for the PDP’s future direction as it seeks to rebuild public trust and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general election.
