Governor Ahmed Aliyu presents Sokoto State’s N758.7bn 2026 budget, prioritising security, social services, and economic expansion
Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Wednesday presented a N758.7 billion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year to the Sokoto State House of Assembly, emphasising plans to strengthen security, expand social services, and stimulate economic growth.

The proposal, dubbed the “Budget of Socio-Economic Expansion,” was developed through a citizen-driven process, incorporating input from residents across all 23 local government areas and 244 political wards via town hall meetings in the Tambuwal, Tangaza, and Gwadabawa senatorial districts.
Of the total N758.7 billion outlay, N551.4 billion, or 72 per cent, is earmarked for capital projects, while recurrent expenditure accounts for N207.2 billion, or 28 per cent.
Revenue projections include N389.3 billion from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, N74.5 billion from internally generated revenue, and N233.8 billion from grants, aids, and capital development funds.
Security is a top priority, with N45.2 billion allocated for patrol vehicles, motorcycles, and other equipment to support agencies addressing banditry and violent crime.
Health received N122.7 billion, surpassing the 2001 Abuja Declaration benchmark, to fund projects such as the Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital, Murtala Muhammad Hospital, and regional hospitals in Binji, Tambuwal, and Sabon Birni.
Education was allocated N115.9 billion, while N109.1 billion was proposed for works and transportation, including road construction and public transport improvements.
Other allocations include N41.1 billion for water resources, N18.7 billion for agriculture, N17.4 billion for religious affairs, and N33.9 billion for humanitarian services, poverty reduction, and youth empowerment.
Governor Aliyu highlighted that the economic sector commands the largest share at 41 per cent, followed by the social sector at 37 per cent, reflecting a focus on growth, welfare, and stability.
He also noted Sokoto State’s improved fiscal performance in 2025, with over 65 per cent budget implementation achieved without borrowing, and affirmed that the state remains debt-free.

The Sokoto State House of Assembly is expected to review the proposal in detail before its passage.
