Shettima Warns APC Against Destructive Politics Ahead 2027

Shettima cautions APC over destructive politics warning as Vice President urges unity and restraint within APC ahead of 2027 general elections

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, in Abuja on Wednesday issued a stern warning to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging party leaders, aspirants and supporters to avoid what he described as destructive politics as consultations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement titled “2027: Don’t Pull Down the Roof,” the Vice President called for restraint and internal unity, stressing that political ambition must not be allowed to fracture the ruling party’s cohesion.

The Shettima APC destructive politics warning came as early political manoeuvring begins across wards, local government areas and party structures nationwide, with aspirants reportedly engaging in consultations and lobbying efforts.

Shettima likened the APC to a family that must protect its own house, warning that internal competition should not translate into division or hostility.

He noted that while democratic engagement is a healthy feature of Nigeria’s political system, it must be conducted with discipline and mutual respect.

“The political season is here again. We don’t have to pull down the roof. We all should desist from destructive politics,” he said.

He added that the current political atmosphere reflects a functioning democracy where ambition is expected, but cautioned against misinterpreting competition as enmity or disagreement as betrayal.

According to him, every election cycle naturally generates heightened activity, including consultations, delegate engagement and grassroots mobilisation, but such processes must remain within the bounds of party unity.

The Vice President further warned that political actors risk undermining their own party if they allow internal rivalries to escalate into public division or misinformation.

Shettima’s remarks are widely seen as an early attempt to stabilise internal dynamics within the APC as attention gradually shifts towards the 2027 electoral contest.
