Rivers Crisis: APC Keeps Cards Close on Fubara Impeachment Plot

The APC says it will reveal its position on the impeachment plot against Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara when the time is right, amid rising political tension in the state

Fresh political tension gripped Rivers State on Monday night as the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it would only declare its position on the ongoing impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, “when the time is right.”

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, made this known amid mounting public outrage over actions by the Rivers State House of Assembly, where a majority of lawmakers recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

Morka spoke during an appearance on Beyond Headlines on TVC News, as pressure mounted on the ruling party to either rein in the lawmakers or openly support the impeachment drive against the governor.

According to him, the APC is fully aware of the political crisis in Rivers State but is deliberately exercising restraint.

“The fact that I’m not willing to comment on the Rivers crisis on your show does not mean that the APC is disengaged in Rivers State,” Morka said.

“We are a political party, and a responsible party at that. Our job is to govern our party maturely. When it’s time to share our positions or decisions on the Rivers crisis, be assured that I will come here and share them boldly.”

He added that internal party mechanisms and constitutional processes must be allowed to run their course before any official stance is taken.

“There are processes that must be enabled to do their job so that at the end of the day, we call it right,” he stated.

While the APC’s national leadership has maintained a cautious approach, the party’s Rivers State chapter has taken a firmer stance.

Over the weekend, the state chapter described the impeachment proceedings as a “legislative coup d’etat.”

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the Rivers APC also called on the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, to comply with a court order halting the impeachment process.

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo had on Friday issued an interim injunction restraining the Chief Judge from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice or resolution from the House of Assembly.

As the political drama continues to unfold, all eyes remain on the APC’s national leadership and whether it will intervene decisively in the escalating Rivers State crisis.
