In a statement released on Friday through his media team, Senator Kwankwaso categorically denied submitting any letter of intent to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), amid swirling reports of behind-the-scenes negotiations.
“We have been alerted to some online statements suggesting that we have submitted a letter of intent to join a political party in the country,” he wrote.
“We would like to clarify that we have not made any such submission to any party.”
The Rabiu Kwankwaso defection buzz began early Friday when political insiders claimed that he had opened discreet communication with the APC leadership.
Some even alleged that a letter had been sent to the party’s national secretariat.
While sources within the APC hinted at quiet engagement between the two camps, Kwankwaso’s media office insists there is no such arrangement, urging the public to rely only on verified channels for updates.
The development has stirred new speculation in Nigeria’s political sphere, particularly with the 2027 general elections looming and major parties beginning to reposition themselves.
Though Kwankwaso remains publicly committed to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), analysts note that his influence in northern politics makes him a strategic target for both the ruling APC and rival opposition groups.
For now, the Rabiu Kwankwaso defection rumour remains just that — a rumour.

But in Nigeria’s political climate, such denials are often viewed with caution, especially when strategic alignments are being quietly considered behind closed doors.
