Peter Obi’s Edo Visit Sparks Outrage Over Governor’s Controversial Remarks

Peter Obi’s Edo visit sparks outrage as Governor Okpebholo demands clearance, raising fears about free movement and democracy in Nigeria

The Peter Obi’s Edo visit has stirred national debate following Governor Monday Okpebholo’s controversial claim that the Labour Party leader must seek his approval before entering the state.

The former presidential candidate visited Benin City on 7 July, where he donated ₦15 million to the St. Philomena School of Nursing.

Days later, Governor Okpebholo alleged that Obi’s presence had caused unrest and insisted that future visits would require “security clearance.”

Observers have condemned the statement, calling it a violation of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

The law guarantees citizens the right to move freely and engage in lawful public activities without government interference.

“The idea that Peter Obi needs permission to visit any Nigerian state is undemocratic and unconstitutional,” a civil rights lawyer told reporters. “This is about politics, not public safety.”

This is not the first time the former Anambra governor has faced obstacles while travelling.

In April, Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia also barred Obi from visiting certain public sites.

More recently, police in Kaduna stopped his supporters from holding a peaceful rally.

The Peter Obi Edo visit has become a symbol of the wider political intolerance that many say threatens Nigeria’s democratic progress.

Critics argue that the governor’s stance reflects a deeper fear of growing opposition popularity.

Rather than support Obi’s charitable gesture, the state government has questioned his motives.

This reaction has drawn criticism from activists who say public officials should focus on delivering good governance instead of suppressing dissent.

According to the Constitution, Nigerians have a right to freedom of movement and expression.

Restricting these rights based on political rivalry weakens democracy and could set a dangerous precedent.

The Peter Obi Edo visit is now a flashpoint in the conversation about how power is exercised at state level.

As 2027 approaches, many worry that such tactics could escalate and undermine electoral fairness.

Leaders across party lines are being urged to defend democratic norms. As one observer said, “If you are doing well in office, you shouldn’t be afraid of your opponent visiting.”
