Peter Obi champions youth empowerment at Commonwealth HQ

Peter Obi youth empowerment efforts highlighted in London visit as he calls for stronger investment in education, skills, and innovation across the Commonwealth.

Peter Obi youth empowerment drive took centre stage in London this week as the former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate visited the Commonwealth Secretariat, urging deeper investment in education, innovation, and entrepreneurship to drive development and democratic resilience across member states.

The meeting, held on Thursday, 16 October 2025, brought Obi and his wife into discussions with the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Botchwey, at the organisation’s Marlborough House headquarters.

Writing on social platform X the following day, Obi described the encounter as “a valuable opportunity to explore practical ways of strengthening democracy and economic growth through youth-driven initiatives.”

“With over 2.5 billion of the Commonwealth’s population under the age of 30, young people remain the organisation’s greatest asset and hope for the future,” Obi wrote.

He emphasised that in countries like Nigeria, which is “richly endowed with human and natural resources,” unlocking the potential of young people hinges on committed investment in education, digital innovation, and SME development.

“When properly equipped, our young people will not only drive national development but also contribute significantly to global progress,” he said.

Obi stressed that youth unemployment remains one of the most pressing issues in Nigeria and across the Global South, calling for “intentional and practical action” through skills development and inclusive policy-making.

“It is only through empowering the youth that democracy can be sustained and our collective future secured,” he added.

In alignment, Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey, the first African woman to lead the 56-member organisation, reportedly reaffirmed that her tenure would prioritise education, youth engagement, and employment creation.

Obi praised her leadership style, calling her a “trailblazer” whose reform-minded agenda continues to “amplify the voices of developing nations within the Commonwealth.”

“Her visionary leadership continues to inspire cooperation and progress,” he noted.

Botchwey is said to have echoed Obi’s concerns, affirming that empowering young people is “indispensable to shaping a stable, peaceful, and prosperous future for all Commonwealth citizens.”

While the Commonwealth Secretariat has yet to issue an official statement on the meeting, observers say the dialogue marks a significant step in Obi’s ongoing advocacy for human capital development as the bedrock of Africa’s future.
