The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, accompanied by party members including Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Yunusa Tanko, emphasised that unity and mutual respect are essential for national progress.
He urged Nigerians of all backgrounds to embrace love and togetherness, regardless of tribe, religion or political affiliation.
Speaking at the Bodija residence of the Olubadan-designate, Obi said, “Can we unite and love each other to build a better country? We have no other country except this one. We must all build it together for the benefit of everybody.”
He described the visit as a gesture of honour to Oba Ladoja, whom he praised as a seasoned leader with a rich legacy of public service, spanning the Senate, governorship, and the private sector.
Obi expressed confidence that the monarch-in-waiting would elevate Ibadan to new heights, given its historical and strategic importance in Nigeria’s socio-political development.
“Ibadan is central to Nigeria’s future. It has always been a beacon of education and leadership. With Ladoja as Olubadan, the city is in capable hands,” Obi added.
Oba Ladoja, in response, dismissed any notion of glamour attached to the throne, calling it a platform for service rather than prestige.
“The time of glamour is gone. In contemporary times, it is about what you have on the table for the people,” he said.
The visit also witnessed the presence of PDP lawmakers, who similarly paid homage to the Olubadan-designate.
They echoed Obi’s sentiments, reaffirming the role of the traditional institution in fostering unity and responsible governance.
Peter Obi urges unity not just as a campaign message, but as a national necessity.
His call resonates in a time when Nigeria grapples with deepening divisions.
