Peter Obi Urges Compassion, Criticises Tinubu’s Leadership Style

2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi urges compassion from President Bola Tinubu, stating that the presidency demands sacrifice, empathy, and humility—not luxury and detachment.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi criticised the Tinubu administration for being out of touch with the harsh realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.

He said the government’s lavish spending, including reports of a proposed N150 billion jet purchase, is insensitive when over 80 per cent of primary healthcare centres are non-functional.

“If I become president, I will use resources effectively. I cannot say, ‘buy a new jet.’ I don’t need one because I can go anywhere without it,” he said.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, reflected on his own time in office as an example of modest leadership.

“I drove a 406 for four years. I didn’t use bulletproof cars. If you do the right thing, nobody will try to kill you,” he added.

Peter Obi urges compassion not just in policy but in personal conduct.

He criticised Tinubu for remaining in Lagos during the 2024 Christmas holidays instead of visiting grieving families in Ibadan, where a tragic stampede claimed the lives of several children.

“There is no compassion. People lost their children who will lead this country in the future, and he went on a Christmas holiday,” Obi said.

He also condemned the president’s failure to visit Yelwata in Benue State after attacks by suspected herdsmen displaced thousands.
