Speaking during an interactive session with the Nigeria Guild of Editors in Enugu, Governor Mbah stated clearly that his political allegiance remains with the PDP.
“I am still in the PDP, as you can see, the flag behind me is that of the PDP,” he told journalists, effectively laying to rest speculations of a possible defection.
He acknowledged that the PDP, like every political institution, is experiencing internal tensions.
However, he said these were not unique to the party, pointing out that other political organisations across Nigeria were facing similar challenges.
Governor Mbah expressed optimism about the future of the PDP, noting that the party was on course to resolve its internal disputes and emerge stronger.
He urged the public not to overreact to routine political disagreements that characterise democratic institutions.
On the subject of independent candidacy, Mbah provided a constitutional explanation, stating that Nigeria’s legal framework does not permit unaffiliated individuals to run for office.
“Our constitution does not recognise or have provision for someone to run as an independent candidate. It means you have to be sponsored by a political party,” he said.
The governor further stressed that despite political dynamics, his administration’s priority remains governance.
“It is also clear from the people of Enugu State that we are in this to serve them. So we have focused largely on governance.
I believe that at the end of the day, the people would have to decide whether they want to renew our mandate or kick us out,” he remarked.
Governor Mbah also revealed a major shift in Enugu’s political scene, announcing that his former rival in the 2023 governorship race, Chijioke Edeoga, has now rejoined the PDP.
According to him, the reunion has reduced unnecessary political conflict and allowed for a collaborative effort to improve the state.
“So we’re working closely together and that has also brought a lot of peace as we are not spending money dealing with all sorts of political fights,” he said.
“We are quite peaceful here in terms of politics and working together. We have to collaborate with an institution or a person in order to achieve our common goal and build our state.”
Governor Mbah’s comments come amid increasing public interest in political realignments across the country.
