PDP Needs Unity to Reclaim Ekiti, says Ex-Commissioner

PDP aspirant Funmi Ogun urges party unity as leadership crisis threatens Ekiti 2026 governorship bid, stressing the need for urgent reconciliation

Funmi Ogun PDP unity call has echoed across Ekiti State’s political landscape as the former Commissioner for Works voiced concern over unresolved tensions within her party’s national leadership.

Mrs Funmi Ogun, a governorship aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, expressed confidence in the PDP’s strength and growing appeal ahead of the 2026 governorship election. The poll is scheduled to hold on 20 June 2026.

She noted that the party’s members have worked tirelessly across the state, creating what she described as “real momentum” driven by the people’s hunger for change.

In a statement released in Ado Ekiti by her Special Adviser on Media, Oladimeji Atenibiaje, Ogun affirmed that the ongoing mobilisation by party leaders and grassroots stakeholders positioned the PDP as a solid alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

However, Ogun warned that the political gains recorded in Ekiti could be jeopardised if the internal crisis plaguing the PDP’s National Working Committee is not resolved.

She pointed specifically to the controversy surrounding the office of the party’s National Secretary.

“Our objective is to win the 2026 governorship election and bring about transformative governance in Ekiti,” Ogun declared.

“But the unresolved issues within the NWC are troubling. These distractions could weaken our campaign machinery at a critical time.”

She called on the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Iliya Umar Damagun, to intervene decisively and ensure that the dispute does not derail the party’s broader goals.

According to her, unity must take precedence over individual ambition if the PDP hopes to reclaim its national relevance.

“I appeal to the leadership to find a common ground that will put an end to the ongoing dispute. The PDP is bigger than any single person or group.

A divided house cannot stand, especially with the 2027 general election on the horizon,” she said.

The party has been struggling with a leadership battle involving Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary, whose position has sparked fierce debate and intensified factional divisions.

The crisis is reported to have split the party’s ranks, with some governors backing Anyanwu and others aligning with loyalists of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Ogun’s remarks come at a time when preparations for the Ekiti governorship race are gaining momentum.
