PDP zoning committee inauguration sets stage for 2025 national convention as party begins strategic office distribution across geopolitical zones.
PDP zoning committee inauguration took center stage in Abuja on Thursday, marking a key step toward the Peoples Democratic Party’s national convention set for November 15 and 16, 2025.

The party officially inaugurated a 44-member zoning panel tasked with recommending the distribution of National Working Committee (NWC) positions across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
This pivotal committee will guide the PDP’s internal restructuring as it prepares to elect new leaders and reset its strategy for future national elections.
Speaking at the inauguration, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum stressed the importance of fairness, equity, and strategic alignment.
“This committee is the engine room where we lay the political foundation for the leadership of the PDP over the next four years,” Damagum said. “Our zoning process must reflect fairness, equity, and strategic thinking.”
By party tradition, if the chairmanship is zoned to the North, the presidential ticket typically goes to the South—and vice versa.
The 2021 zoning of the chairmanship to the North was followed by a controversial open-ticket presidential race in 2022, leading to unresolved internal divisions that the party now hopes to mend.
Damagum urged committee members to prioritize party unity and electoral viability over personal interests.
“The PDP is bigger than any individual, stronger than any momentary setback, and destined to remain a central force in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” he said.
The zoning committee’s recommendations will be submitted to the National Executive Committee (NEC), which will have the final say on the positions ahead of the November convention.
With the stakes high, the zoning process will likely influence not only leadership roles but also the party’s strategy for the 2027 elections.
The PDP, once Nigeria’s dominant political force, is aiming for a power resurgence.
Amid defections and leadership shifts, this zoning process is seen as a strategic reset that could realign the party and rebuild trust among members and supporters nationwide.

As the November convention approaches, all eyes will be on how the committee navigates regional interests, internal rifts, and the broader goal of regaining national relevance.
