PDP Crisis Deepens as Wike Camp Rejects Alleged NEC Meeting

The PDP is embroiled in fresh internal tension as the Wike camp rejects claims of a National Executive Committee meeting and caretaker committee formation

The internal crisis within Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) intensified on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, as a faction aligned with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, rejected reports of a purported 103rd National Executive Committee meeting and the announcement of a caretaker committee.

The Wike-aligned group dismissed the claims as false and without legal standing, insisting that no legitimate NEC meeting of the party had been convened in accordance with established procedures.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the faction described the reported gathering as an attempt to mislead the public and create confusion within the party structure.

The PDP NEC meeting dispute has further exposed widening divisions within the opposition party, with both sides trading accusations over legitimacy and authority.

Mohammed maintained that any resolutions said to have emerged from the meeting were null and void, arguing that they carried no constitutional or legal weight.

He further stressed that proper procedure under the Electoral Act requires adequate notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission before any NEC meeting can hold, adding that no such compliance was observed.

The statement also criticised key figures linked to the reported meeting, questioning their consistency and credibility in handling internal party matters.

It argued that recent developments reflect what it described as attempts by certain individuals to assert control without due process, further deepening existing tensions within the party hierarchy.

The faction urged party members and stakeholders to disregard any decisions emanating from the disputed meeting, insisting that the PDP remains under its recognised leadership structure.

As the dispute continues, the situation underscores ongoing power struggles within the opposition party ahead of future political contests.
