PDP Leadership Vows Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections

PDP leadership pledges unity, reconciliation, and grassroots rebuilding ahead of the 2027 elections, urging Nigerians to trust the party again

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Taminu Turaki (SAN), said the party has woken from its slumber and is correcting past mistakes that led to internal crises.

Turaki, supported by Oyo and Bauchi State governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, made the statement on Wednesday during the PDP Board of Trustees meeting in Abuja.

Acknowledging the enormous responsibility entrusted to the new leadership, Turaki pledged to prioritise reconciliation. “Now is the time for peace. One of the cardinal principles of this leadership is reconciliation.

We believe there is no dispute or disagreement that cannot be resolved where there is a common objective and collective will to strengthen the party,” he said.

Turaki stressed the importance of returning to the grassroots, highlighting the party’s connection with ordinary Nigerians.

“You knew us, you trusted us, we made mistakes, but we are waking up from our slumber. We are ready to correct those mistakes. We ask Nigerians to trust us again,” he added.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, described the Ibadan convention, which produced the Turaki-led National Working Committee, as a demonstration of the party’s commitment to internal democracy, transparency and constitutional order.

He emphasised reconciliation and collective healing as essential for restoring confidence across the federation.

“These are giant strides that give hope not just to party members, but to millions of Nigerians who see the PDP as a credible alternative to the present state of affairs. However, as we celebrate progress, we must also embrace unity,” Wabara said.

He urged aggrieved members to return fully to the PDP family, stressing the party’s role in offering an alternative to the current APC-led government amid rising insecurity and economic challenges.

Meanwhile, former presidential aspirant Dr Gbenga Hashim asserted that the PDP would not be intimidated by political manoeuvres designed to weaken opposition parties. Hashim compared current efforts to undermine opposition to the failed self-succession plan of the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, saying such plots are doomed to fail.

Separately, the leadership crisis in the Kogi State PDP took a new turn on Wednesday, as newly sworn-in chairman Mohammed Sani Gambo accused predecessor Enemona Anyebe of impersonation and disobeying a Federal High Court judgment.

Gambo’s lawyers petitioned the Kogi State Commissioner of Police to investigate, citing video evidence of Anyebe parading himself as chairman.

Anyebe denied the allegation, claiming a notice of appeal and motion for stay of execution had been filed, which he said legally suspends the court’s judgment until determined.
