Adebayo Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation over the Osun EFCC account freeze controversy, arguing that the President bears responsibility for the decision
Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over the controversy surrounding the freezing of the Osun State Government’s account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Adebayo made the statement on Thursday while speaking with journalists after an event in Abuja, arguing that responsibility for actions taken by federal agencies ultimately rests with the President.
The controversy began after the EFCC froze an account belonging to the Osun State Government at First Bank days before the state’s governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
The anti-graft agency said the action followed the discovery of suspicious transactions linked to the account, while the development triggered criticism from opposition parties and political observers who questioned the timing of the move.
President Tinubu later directed the EFCC to return to court, seek the vacation of the order and discontinue the action, a decision announced by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
The reversal led to calls from some quarters for the resignation of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, with critics arguing that the agency’s action had created concerns over institutional neutrality.
However, Adebayo rejected calls targeting the EFCC chairman, insisting that the President should bear responsibility instead.
“Well, the person who should resign is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I don’t have enough evidence to suggest that the EFCC chairman should resign. The only person who is at fault here is the President himself because the EFCC is a very difficult place to work,” Adebayo said.
The SDP candidate argued that security and anti-corruption agencies operate within a challenging environment and that leadership responsibility should be traced to the highest level of government.
His comments add to growing political reactions surrounding the Osun account freeze episode, which has become a major issue ahead of the governorship election.
While supporters of the President have defended the decision to reverse the action as evidence of responsive leadership, opposition figures have continued to demand explanations over how the account freeze was initiated and who authorised the move.
The controversy has also renewed debate about the independence of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies and the need for clear institutional safeguards to prevent political interpretations of enforcement actions, especially during election periods.

As the Osun governorship election approaches, political parties continue to call for a transparent process and for government institutions to maintain public confidence throughout the electoral period.
