Osun APC Rejects Claims of Illegal Council Occupation

Osun APC rejects PDP and civil society claims, insisting council chairmen legally occupy local government secretariats

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State has rejected allegations from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and a coalition of civil society organisations that its council chairmen are illegally occupying local government secretariats across the state.

The dispute follows demands from the Network of Civil Society Groups that the tenure of APC local government chairmen, said to have expired on October 26, 2025, be immediately terminated.

The group accused the Osun State Police Command of protecting what it described as unlawful occupants of council offices.

Stephen Olanrewaju, convener of the network, said unresolved legal disputes over council administration date back to February 2025.

He cited a Federal High Court ruling in 2022 that nullified purported APC local government elections, sacking all chairmen and councillors, a decision upheld on appeal by the Court of Appeal.

“Despite the court rulings, the sacked officials refused to vacate office, claiming a reinstatement order which does not exist. They continue to occupy council secretariats with armed police protection,” Olanrewaju said, urging security agencies to desist from actions that promote lawlessness.

Oladele Bamiji, Osun PDP Director of Media, aligned with the civil society position, called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, warning that the continued occupation of local government offices could undermine democratic governance.

Responding, Kola Olabisi, Osun APC spokesperson, dismissed the allegations as misinformation.

He said the chairmen were reinstated by a Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 10, 2025, which has not been appealed.

Olabisi added that a Federal High Court case in Osogbo is ongoing to determine the tenure of the reinstated chairmen and the timing of potential fresh elections.

“The APC chairmen are legally occupying their offices, and any suggestion to the contrary is a misunderstanding of the legal framework governing local government administration,” Olabisi said.
