Onanuga’s defection comparison involving Atiku and Peter Obi as Tinubu aide describes Atiku Abubakar as a serial defector like Peter Obi in political remarks
Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a “serial defector”, likening him to Labour Party figure Peter Obi in a politically charged commentary shared on social media.

Onanuga, Atiku and Obi’s defection claim was made in a post on X, formerly Twitter, where the presidential aide reacted to a documentary highlighting Atiku Abubakar’s long-standing presidential ambitions.
Bayo Onanuga referred to Atiku Abubakar as a veteran presidential candidate, while drawing comparisons between his political journey and that of Peter Obi.
“A short documentary on Atiku Abubakar, a serial defector like Peter Obi, and a veteran presidential candidate,” Onanuga wrote.
The remarks have sparked renewed discussion around the political histories of both opposition figures, who have played significant roles in Nigeria’s democratic landscape over the past decades.
Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President of Nigeria, has pursued presidential ambition since 1993, contesting multiple elections under different political platforms.
Peter Obi, on the other hand, rose to national prominence as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, where he gained significant youth support and reshaped political conversations.
Onanuga’s comparison adds to ongoing political rhetoric between ruling and opposition camps as Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general elections.
