NNPP Rules Out Sanction for Abdulmumin Jibrin’s Tinubu Visit

NNPP says Abdulmumin Jibrin won’t face sanctions over Tinubu meeting, stressing no anti-party activity was committed and party remains open to dialogue

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has dismissed speculations that it will sanction Abdulmumin Jibrin, the lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano, over his recent closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, stated that the party was aware of the meeting and saw no violation of its rules or principles.

“No, there is nothing like that,” Johnson said. “When you talk to people in the ruling party or the President and the party is aware of it, no one can accuse you of anti-party activities.”

The comments come amid rising speculation over Jibrin’s possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), especially after he publicly expressed openness to switching political allegiances.

“We are a democratic party,” Johnson added. “We understand that today someone might be with you, and tomorrow they might be elsewhere. But the party keeps growing—that’s the most important thing.”

He further noted that the NNPP, under the leadership of Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has consistently maintained an open and inclusive posture on internal engagement and future alliances.

Jibrin’s meeting with Tinubu at the State House on Wednesday stirred defection rumours, especially after the lawmaker, a known Kwankwaso ally, told reporters that “everything is open, and it’s a possibility.”

“I do not think it is time for that conversation. But the most important thing is the stability and unity of the country. When we get to the bridge, we’ll cross it,” Jibrin said.

Despite these statements, NNPP leadership appears unbothered by the development, indicating that internal mechanisms are in place to handle evolving political realities.
