Niger Delta Youth Protest NNPCL Over Leadership Crisis

Niger Delta youth protest NNPCL leadership in Abuja on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of the Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Ojulari, over allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

The protest, which began around 6:00 a.m., saw scores of youth leaders block the main gates of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Towers in the Central Business District, causing severe traffic disruption along Herbert Macaulay Way

Holding banners with bold inscriptions, the protesters accused Ojulari of excluding the oil-rich Niger Delta region from strategic decision-making, despite the region’s critical role in Nigeria’s oil and gas production.

“We demand fairness, transparency, and leadership that reflects the contribution of our region to the national economy,” one protest leader stated.

The demonstrators insisted on the appointment of a Niger Delta indigene as the next GCEO of the NNPCL, arguing that such inclusion would foster trust and equity in resource control and national representation.

Security personnel, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force, were deployed to the scene to manage the crowd and redirect traffic, allowing only one lane of the dual carriageway to function.

Many workers at the NNPCL headquarters were unable to access the building and had to park their vehicles at a distance adding to the day’s disruption.

The protest, although peaceful, signals growing discontent from the Niger Delta region and amplifies regional demands for greater representation  in national oil governance.

As of press time, neither the NNPCL management nor federal authorities had issued an official response to the protest or the allegations raised.
