The resignations mark a deepening rift between Yusuf and his former political mentor, Kwankwaso, after the governor insisted that his move to the APC was in the “broader interest of Kano State,” despite opposition from the NNPP leader.
Commissioners Ibrahim Umar (Internal Security and Special Services) and Nasiru Sule Garo (Special Duties) submitted resignation letters on Tuesday, explicitly opposing the governor’s political realignment.
Garo stated his decision was reached after “due consideration,” while Umar expressed “profound gratitude and a deep sense of duty” in tendering his resignation with immediate effect.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of the NNPP national leader, resigned both his appointment and membership of the State Executive Council hours before Governor Yusuf’s defection.
Other notable resignations include Alhaji Laminu Rabiu, Director-General of the Kano Pilgrims Board, and Hassan Danbappa, Managing Director of the Kano State Roads Maintenance Agency (KARMA).
Governor Yusuf’s defection was supported by a significant number of political figures, including 22 of the 24-member House of Assembly, nine of 14 NNPP federal lawmakers, and all 44 local government council chairmen.
Kwankwaso described the move as a “betrayal,” highlighting the growing political divide within the state.
