Kano Assembly suspends LGA chairmen from Bagwai, Bebeji and Rogo over alleged corruption, financial misappropriation and abuse of office
The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of Bagwai, Bebeji and Rogo Local Government Areas for three months over allegations of corruption, financial misappropriation and abuse of office.

The Kano Assembly suspends LGA chairmen decision followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during plenary on Tuesday.
The committee’s report was presented by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Dala, who said investigations were launched after separate petitions were submitted against the three council chairmen.
The petitions came from the Legislative Councils of Bebeji and Rogo Local Government Areas, alongside concerned residents of Bagwai, with allegations including misuse of public funds, breach of trust, administrative irregularities and violations of due process.
According to the committee, lawmakers reviewed financial documents, examined records from the affected local government councils and engaged members of the respective legislative councils before reaching their recommendations.
For Bagwai Local Government Area, the committee said its findings indicated possible misappropriation of funds allocated for development projects.
In Bebeji Local Government Area, the committee reported allegations of abuse of office, irregular contract processes, improper disposal of local government property, diversion of public funds and unlawful deductions from contract payments.
The committee also alleged that some contractors were instructed to transfer contract payments into accounts linked to the Executive Chairman, a practice it said contradicted established financial and procurement procedures.
For Rogo Local Government Area, the committee accused the council chairman of failing to comply with administrative regulations, undermining government programmes and allegedly mismanaging funds meant for feeder road construction and rural electrification projects.
Following its findings, the committee recommended the immediate suspension of the three chairmen to allow for further investigation into the allegations.
The recommendation was based on Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which provide state legislatures with powers to conduct investigations and exercise oversight over public institutions.
The Assembly subsequently directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolution to the Kano State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for implementation.
The lawmakers said the suspension was aimed at enabling a transparent investigation while protecting public resources and strengthening accountability within local government administration.
The affected council chairmen have not been convicted of any wrongdoing, and the allegations remain subject to further investigation and due process.

The development adds to ongoing national discussions about transparency, financial management and accountability at the local government level across Nigeria.
