Jonathan Urges Tinubu, Governors to Embrace Accountability

Jonathan urges accountability from Tinubu, governors and political leaders, calling for good governance, sacrifice and respect for the rule of law

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday, October 1, 2026, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors and other Nigerian political leaders to embrace greater responsibility, sacrifice and accountability as Nigeria marked its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Jonathan delivered the message in a statement published on his verified X account, calling on leaders and citizens to deepen their commitment to building a peaceful, secure and equitable country.

The former president said Nigeria’s ability to realise its potential would depend heavily on the quality of leadership and the willingness of those in authority to confront the country’s social and economic challenges.

Jonathan urged political leaders to place personal sacrifice, good governance and accountability at the centre of public service.

“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritizing personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” he said.

The former president also called for stronger commitment to national service, stressing that leaders and citizens alike had responsibilities in shaping Nigeria’s future.

“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” Jonathan said.

His appeal came as Nigerians marked 66 years since independence from British colonial rule, with national conversations focusing on the country’s economic challenges, security, governance and the prospects for a more prosperous future.

Jonathan also directed part of his message towards young Nigerians, urging them to maintain hope and demonstrate courage despite the difficulties facing the country.

He encouraged youths and other citizens to work towards a better Nigeria, saying collective commitment remained essential to creating opportunities for future generations.

The former president’s message adds to a series of Independence Day statements from current and former political leaders, religious figures and civil society voices calling for renewed patriotism, unity and responsible leadership.

Nigeria gained independence on October 1, 1960, and the 66th anniversary provides another opportunity for reflection on the country’s journey, its achievements and the challenges that remain.

Jonathan’s intervention centred on the need for leadership to match national aspirations with concrete action, particularly through adherence to the rule of law, accountability and responsible governance.
