Nigeria @66: Okpebholo Calls for Peace, Unity and Patriotism

Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo says there is still much to be done as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, urging peace, unity and patriotism

As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said there is still much to be done to move the country forward, stressing that the progress recorded so far should serve as a foundation for greater development.

Okpebholo stated this in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

The governor commended the people of Edo State for their patience and support, noting that government exists primarily to serve the people and must remain responsive to their concerns, including feedback that may be difficult to receive.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as efforts to reposition Nigeria for greater development.

According to Okpebholo, the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government represents an important step towards addressing the country’s economic challenges and achieving national revival.

He said the administration’s policies had contributed to movement towards economic stability and growth, while urging Nigerians to remain committed to building a peaceful and united country.

Okpebholo called on citizens to use the 66th Independence Anniversary as an opportunity to renew their commitment to peace, unity and patriotism.

He stressed that patriotism goes beyond words, saying it is also demonstrated through the way citizens treat one another and protect public property.

The governor also assured residents of Edo State that his administration would continue to prioritise the protection of lives and property.

He described security as the first responsibility of government, noting that farming, trade, investment and other economic activities can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace.

“We have worked hard to make Edo safer. We are rebuilding our roads, upgrading our schools and hospitals, and creating opportunities for our teeming youths,” Okpebholo said.

He added that his administration would continue to collaborate with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to strengthen security across the state.

According to him, traditional and community leaders are particularly important to the security architecture because of their close relationship with residents and knowledge of their respective communities.

The governor also warned individuals who may attempt to disrupt the peace in Edo State, declaring that the state would not provide a safe environment for criminal activities.

Okpebholo urged Edo residents to continue supporting efforts aimed at improving security and accelerating development across the state.
