INEC in Osun urges stakeholders to uphold election integrity, warning officials against result manipulation and ensuring a credible 2026 poll
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has charged stakeholders in Osun State to take greater responsibility in ensuring credible elections ahead of the 2026 governorship polls.
Dr Mutiu Agboke, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun, made the call during a series of stakeholders’ meetings held on Wednesday in Osogbo, Ede North, and Ede South local government areas.

Participants included political parties, transport unions, security agencies, and civil society organisations.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Agboke emphasised that electoral credibility depends on strict adherence to guidelines.
He warned that no candidate would be declared winner without legitimately securing voter support. “Nobody will win any election in Osun State without the votes of the people,” he stated.
The REC explained that decentralised consultations across local governments were intended to strengthen planning and coordination.
He outlined measures for accountability, noting that all ad-hoc staff would sign an affidavit of commitment before deployment, and any breach would attract prosecution.
Electoral officers, including presiding and collation officials, were cautioned against tampering with results. “Election matters are serious and should only involve individuals committed to democratic development.
Any altered result will be traced, and the responsible official arrested and prosecuted,” Agboke said.
Dr Agboke also urged the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to avoid partisan activity during the polls.
INEC plans to establish a situation room to monitor compliance and ensure smooth coordination.
Security agencies reassured stakeholders of adequate measures to maintain peace before, during, and after the elections.
Officials highlighted vulnerable areas, such as parts of Ede North, calling for targeted interventions to address overcrowding, drug-related issues, and potential thuggery.

The REC concluded that misinformation challenges encountered since his assumption of office would not hinder preparations for the Osun governorship election.
